Writer, playwright and poet Roy McFarlane invites you to explore the theme "Who Am I?" at this creative writing workshop. Together with other Young Writers and mentors, in this dynamic workshop we'll try different prompts and exercises to explore themes of identity, character and finding our voice - whether for ourselves as writers or for our characters. What's your story? Whether poetry or prose, get writing about identity with award winning writer Roy.
Come to experiment and try out some new ideas, or create something to submit to the the next YWC anthology and get published, all YWC members are welcome to come along and get creating.
Travel expenses to attend the workshop will be covered (if travelling within Sussex)

You'll receive a YWC notebook to take home with you
Pens and paper will be provided. Bring along a digital writing device with you if you prefer to write that way.
The venue is fully wheelchair accessible and there are lifts.
About Roy McFarlane
Workshop leader Dr Roy McFarlane FRSL is an award winning poet, playwright and former youth and community worker born in Birmingham of Jamaican parentage spending most of his years living in Wolverhampton and the Black Country, now living in Brighton.
He’s been the National Canal Laureate, a former Birmingham Poet Laureate and one of the Bards of Brum performing in the Opening Ceremony for Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.
He’s presently touring Take Flight a performance collaboration of words, jazz, gospel and blues influenced by his third collection Living by Troubled Waters (Nine Arches Press 2022). He’s first non-fiction The Way of the Poet (Nine Arches Press) is coming out in October 2026.
Getting to Brighton Youth Centre

Brighton Youth Centre is approximately a 20 minute walk from Brighton Station. Exit the station onto Queen’s Road and walk straight down the hill. Turn left onto Church Street and at the end of Church Street keep going straight across Marlborough Place (at the bottom of Victoria Gardens, with Brighton Pavilion to your right). Cross over at the traffic lights on Grand Parade, turn right the first street on your left will be Edward Street. Walk up Edward Street a short way and Brighton Youth Centre will be on your left
The nearest bus stops are Park Street (Routes 1, 2, 7, 23) and Egremont Place (Routes 18, 23)
