Aged 13-18? Got something to say?
Want to develop your skills, grow in confidence and get ready to perform?
Amplified is a platform for young creatives, aged 13-18, to express themselves through spoken word, poetry, lyrics and performance. You choose what you want to write about and how you want to say it. For 2026, Amplified will take place in Eastbourne throughout April and May.
A free opportunity to take part in workshops that will develop your skills and confidence, taking you from a blank page to performing your own real life stories on stage. An opportunity to express yourself and speak about what matters to you, whether through spoken word/poetry/rap/comedy/lyrics or other ways. Each Amplified performer will get ready to take to the mic for a maximum of five minutes.
With workshops and support from professional experts Roy McFarlane, Cate Ferris, Suhayla El-Bushra and mentors. Amplified allows young creatives the opportunity to express what they want to say, however they want to say it . The project will also be documented in a short film.
Led by Young Writers Collective and AudioActive, supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here is some key info to consider when deciding if this experience is for you.

Anyone aged 13 to 18 who is based in Sussex can sign up. All we ask is that you're available for all of the workshops and the rehearsal/performance date and that you can get to the venue in Eastbourne, Sussex (travel expenses are covered). Past participants have spoken about their experiences of being autistic, being an actor with Down’s Syndrome, being an introvert. They’ve shared stories of what it is like for them to be LGBTQIA+, or their story of being a refugee. Other Amplified performances have talked about personal hobbies and special interests, or shared what they would like older generations to know. Some stories have been funny, some have made people cry, some have done both at once! Every story has been different, and yours will be too.

Nothing! It is free to take part. Travel expenses will be covered. We provide everyone with a notebook, pen and food to eat at the workshops too.
-
No, you don't need previous experience in performing, writing or music to apply. Everyone is welcome to sign up to take part. We will support you through the process from a blank page to perform your story on stage in the way that you choose. You can learn new skills, meet new people and increase in your confidence .

No, it doesn't matter how confident or skilled you feel at writing already. In these creative workshops you'll learn lots of ways to tell the stories you want to tell. We will support you week to week, step by step to develop what you want to say and how you want to say it.
Past participants have included young people from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities, so whether you are are someone who writes a lot or someone who struggles to get your ideas down, whether English is your first langauge or not, whether you have dyslexia or a disability and whether or not you've ever tried anything like this before, anyone can take part!
We will help and support you as needed in the workshops to share the words you want to share - we have mentors who can scribe for you if that helps, or you can bring along assistance technology like tablets/laptops if that helps you to communicate rather than writing by hand.
-
No, not at all! Music/ lyrics is just one of the ways that you could choose to express yourself on this project. You may not want to do anything musical at all and that is fine! There are a whole range of ways you could share what you want to say, from poetry to comedy to storytelling to a speech, and our workshop leaders will help you find the way that feels right for you.
If you did want to share something involving music or develop your songwriting and performing skills then of course you would be supported to do that - our Workshop Leaders are experts in different types of writing and performing, from spoken word poetry to songwriting and live music performance.
-
Nothing except yourself, an open mind, and a commitment to take part in the workshops process. We will provide all the equipment you'll need, from notebooks to pens to mics and audio equipment to experiment with sound. We will provide food (free pizza, anyone?) and refreshments too, catering for all dietary requirements.

You'll be one of up to 15 young creatives taking part in Amplified. You will all work on your own solo stories, ready to perform for up to 5 minutes or less on stage at the show. There will be opportunities to work together in small groups on exercises, as well as on your own. You'll be supported by 2 workshop leaders and also up to 4 adult mentors too each week.

Previous Amplified participants have said that they really enjoyed the chance to develop their skills, grow in confidence, perform live on stage, and surprise themselves! You'll learn new skills, work with experts in music and writing, meet other young creatives and the chance to try something new.

Each Amplified creative will perform for up to 5 minutes each on stage, on the mic, at The Birley Centre’s auditorium in Eastbourne on Saturday 16 May. Performances can be shorter than this (between 1 to 3 minutes). The performance will be in front of a friendly audience of guests of all ages including anyone you'd like to invite. It will be hosted by Roy McFarlane and there might be the chance for audience to ask questions at the end. The performance will be free to attend and recorded into a short film.
